So Long, It's Been Good To Know You

Submitted by shanson on Tue, 10/17/2006 - 5:57pm.

When we started Fedorazine, Fedora Core 1 was just about to release, and it was an exciting time. Now Fedora Core 6 is coming out, and the software is a whole lot more mature than it was when we all started out.

When we created this site, we'd hoped that it would be a great place for lots of people to create really good content about Fedora Core, and to start an interactive community. My vision was that I would serve mostly to keep the site running, and to work as an editor.

Alas, it hasn't seemed to work out that way. We occasionally get contributions from folks, but it's a rarity. We've tried asking, then begging, then pleading. I even tried paying people, but the general concensus was that you needed more money. We don't have it - this was a labor of love, and was intended to pay for itself, but not much more than that. The site has always had lots of readers, and very few contributors (not counting the bots trying to post Viagra Ads all the time).

So - after a lot of consideration, we're going to be easing out of the Fedorazine business. There are way too many other irons in the fire, and as you can see from the content in the last few months, I don't really have the time to contribute a lot any more. And since nobody else has been stepping up to contribute material, I think we're going to let this experiment die out. There are other sites for Fedora information, most notably fedoranews.org.

I'll be keeping the site around for a little while yet, but there won't really be any more postings to the site. If anyone is interested in buying the domain name, get in touch with me .

It's been great fun - I learned a lot - some of which was good, and some not so good. But it's time to move on to other things, mostly ones that might help me earn a living. Thanks for your loyalty - a lot of you read the site. I wish more of you had been willing to pitch in, but - well, it didn't happen.

I'll put up a post when Fedora Core 6 comes out. But other than that, the rest of the features on the site will probably start coming down soon, and I'd expect the site to be gone by the end of the year.

And --- It's out!

Submitted by shanson on Tue, 10/24/2006 - 8:56am.

I don't think that most of the mirrors are unlocked yet, but Fedora Core 6 is available for download by bittorrent.

Official Announcement is now out:

This is the announcement of Zod. Zod permits you to call him "Fedora Core 6".

Tremble, Earthlings, for Zod is released from the confines of testing. Zod intends to hammer the servers of the world ... starting TODAY! For those who chose the world-domination-acceptance package in your last installation, you need do nothing -- Zod is beaming itself to your computers already. If your keyboard begins to get hot, back away ... very ... slowly ...

For the rest of you minions who failed to do Zod's bidding previously, this is your ONE AND ONLY CHANCE to redeem yourself. Go quickly! Download the torrent NOW. Obtain the ISO immediately. Zod's minions know to back up their /home directory and to begin immediate installation of the GREATEST version of Fedora Core EVER.

When you are done genuflecting, listen carefully. Zod now delivers an important message to Zod's predecessor, the Fifth Iteration of Fedora Core, known to some as Bordeaux:

"KNEEL BEFORE ZOD, for Zod has many improvements that convince users to upgrade and abandon you! Ph34r me! Mwahahahaha."

Zod accepts that the Fedora Project continues to provide software and security updates for Bordeaux, as per the policy of Zod's minions. Zod chooses to permit this action to continue.

Those who would understand Zod must begin here:

http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/

Massive downloading of Zod is known to melt servers worldwide, so Zod commands all who are able to use bittorrent.

Another Fedora Core 6 Slip - Update

Submitted by shanson on Mon, 10/16/2006 - 8:10pm.

Okay - it now looks like the release will be Tuesday Oct. 24.Ed- Recent developments make it seem unlikely that there wil be a release on Thursday - the tree is still not considered finished and ready to releaseOver the weekend we ran into a few more bugs with Fedora Core 6 that we decided were important enough to fix. There were some multilib compose issues (wrong packages landing in the wrong dirs), some translation files that would cause tracebacks in things like anaconda (whoops), and a fedora-release package that forgot to enable updates (double whoops). For these reasons and a few others, we decided to respin the release candidate tree and push the release date out another couple of days. The current plan is to spin a release candidate this evening with some last minute fixes, and start the sync. Validation has gone very well up to this point and baring any blow ups in the spin process, the release looks very solid. We're planning to release on Thursday Oct 19th. This should give the

Fedora Core 6 Release Slip

Submitted by shanson on Sun, 10/08/2006 - 9:35pm.

We regret to announce a slip of the Fedora Core 6 release schedule. A few
issues are still present that we would like to see fixed before we release.

- Possible ext3 corruption bug
- Installs with 256megs of ram stall
- Package ordering issues on multilib platforms (x86_64, ppc64)
- SELinux issue with updating kernels on ppc platforms
- iscsi based installations not functional

There are obviously other issues and bugs still open, but these are the ones
that are really "blocking" the release. To give enough time to fix these

Fedora Core 6 Test 3 Release

Announcing Fedora Core 6 Test3 (5.92)

  • Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 11:17:52 -0400

On August 24th, the International Astronomical Union redefined what is
required for planet-hood. This had the result of reclassifying Pluto
as a dwarf planet.

Today, we release Fedora Core 6 Test 3. We have not redefined what is
required for a Fedora release, instead continuing to provide the same
high quality that users have come to expect from Fedora.

==================================

The Fedora Project announces the third and final test release of the
Fedora Core 6 development cycle, available for the i386, x86_64, and
ppc/ppc64 architectures, including Intel based Macintosh computers. Be
aware that Test releases are recommended only for Linux
experts/enthusiasts or for the technology evaluation, as many parts
are likely to be broken and the rate of change is rapid.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Core/Schedule

The final release of Fedora Core 6 is scheduled for release on October
11. At this point, the release is feature complete and in a locked
down bug fix mode. It is important that we get your help in testing,
reporting, and suggesting fixes for bugs. Please direct bugs to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com, product Fedora Core, Version fc6test3. As
always, be sure that your bug is not already fixed by updates and
search for existing bugs before filing.

Thanks to all in the Fedora Project Community who have contributed to
this release. Your continued efforts are what makes Fedora possible.

Max Spevack on Fedora

Submitted by shanson on Fri, 08/18/2006 - 10:54am.

Recently Slashdot posed some questions to Max about the Fedora Project.

These are his answers.

Max Spevack writes: "Hi everyone. I'm looking forward to answering all of the questions, but before I start diving into that, I guess it would be useful to give a little bit of perspective about me and my role within Fedora and Red Hat, because it will offer some context around the things I have to say."

What's Coming in Fedora Core 6

Submitted by shanson on Wed, 08/16/2006 - 12:40pm.

There's a small article on the O'Reilly site on the upcoming features in Fedora Core 6.

I’ve been running Rawhide (the development version of Fedora Core), updating it daily and installing it periodically from a local network server, but the test releases provide a welcome opportunity to install from optical disc.

The step from FC5 to FC6 is smaller and more evolutionary than FC4 to FC5

Fedora Core 6 Test 2 Released, Fedora Core 4 goes to Legacy Support

Submitted by shanson on Wed, 08/09/2006 - 8:58pm.

While I was in Canada, Fedora Core 6 Test 2 was released, and because of that, Fedora Core 4 moved to Legacy support.

The official announcement follows:

In 1888, Theophilus Van Kannel patents his invention, the revolving door.
This invention solves an engineering problem of air transfer by ensuring that
there is no opening to the outside and the inside of a building at the same
time, which could create massive drafts due to air temperature differences.
This invention is still used today.

NewsForge - New Fedora Test Lead Begins Work

Submitted by shanson on Thu, 07/20/2006 - 2:03pm.

Will Woods, the new test lead for the Fedora Project, has only been in his position a few weeks, but already he has a clear goal in mind. Whenever Fedora is mentioned on Slashdot, he notes, "There's always someone who will comment that Fedora is just Red Hat's beta test for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It's not true, and I want no one to have cause to say that ever again."

Woods hopes to prevent such dismissals by introducing Red Hat's internal testing tools to Fedora and by organizing formal testing inside Fedora. By accomplishing these goals, Woods hopes to encourage more large-scale and thorough testing throughout the free software community at large.

Fedora Women

Submitted by shanson on Mon, 07/17/2006 - 8:05am.

In an effort to support the women who use and develop Fedora, the Fedora Women program was launched last week. This new program provides a forum for communication between the women of Fedora, and it will eventually offer additional support to the women that help make Fedora what it is.

The fedora-women-list mailing list is now available. https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-women-list The #fedora-women IRC channel on freenode is available for live chat. Full details about the program can be found on the Fedora Women project page. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Women
